GOOD TO KNOW

A few useful answers.

Small details that make everyday use easier.

What can I see in Your stats?

Open Your stats in the app navigation for items needing a place, low stock, dates to review, shopping progress and storage totals. Tap chart points or bars to explore, or hover with a mouse. Trends start with your first saved change after this update. Put away purchases from the shopping list to record replenishment; manual quantity edits are corrections, not purchases. Older history is not invented. Full JSON backups include activity; CSV exports contain inventory only. Animation respects your device’s reduced-motion setting.

Can one item be stored in several places?

Yes. In the item editor, expand Store in multiple locations and choose Add a location. Set the quantity, kitchen storage or room, shelf, and optional Open / Unopened condition for each row. The total is calculated automatically. For maple syrup, enter 1 in the fridge and 2 in the pantry: the total is 3. For toilet paper, enter 6 in one bathroom, 6 in another, and 10 in storage: 22 total.

To move stock, subtract from one row and add to the other. Removing a row reduces the total. Low-stock reminders use the combined total. Kitchen counters ask which location to update. Full JSON and current CSV exports keep the location breakdown.

How do I start without organizing my entire home?

Start with one shelf and a handful of items. Create an account, then open Household to create a shared home. If you are exploring sample data, choose Start empty in local mode before creating the household. Already have an account? Log in with that same account to open your saved home.

Where did the extra item fields go?

The first screen shows Item name, Category, Quantity and Photo. Save immediately, or expand More options for a room, shelf, package size, expiry date, notes and replenishment. For eggs and similar items, use the 12, 24 or 36 shortcuts. Count by dozens also lets you reveal them manually. You can always type an exact number.

Are my photos compressed?

Yes. Both camera and uploaded item photos are resized to at most 1,000 pixels on their longest side and saved as JPEG with a 76% quality setting. Diagrams use up to 1,600 pixels. Smaller images are not enlarged. File size varies by image; 76% is a quality setting, not a promised file-size reduction. Photos already in your phone’s library stay untouched.

How do I get a better label scan?

Take a straight, well-lit photo without glare. Expand Read a label from this photo, then choose Crop & read label. Rotate and crop tightly around the product name and size. Choose Read selected label, review the suggestion, and choose Use details. The optional reader runs on your device and works best with clear printed English. If it misreads the label, type the details instead.

Reading a photo never replaces a name or size you already entered. Only blank, untouched fields are eligible for suggestions.

Can I add several items by voice?

Tap the purple microphone icon. Follow the room and shelf prompts, then give each item a name and quantity. Review and choose Save item. Add another keeps the same location. You can change rooms, go back, or type at any step. Keep the screen open; tap Speak again if listening stops.

Speech support varies by browser. Your browser or operating system may use its speech provider to process audio. HabiTally does not store an audio recording.

How does my partner join and see changes?

Each person creates their own account. The household owner opens Household → Create invitation and shares the single-use code. The other person joins using that code. Invitations expire after 24 hours. Members can view and edit the household’s items and photos.

Use Household → Refresh inventory to check for the latest changes. If you both save at the same time, HabiTally may load the newer version and ask you to review and save again. Sharing needs internet; phones do not have to be online together.

Does checking Found increase my inventory?

No. Found marks the shopping task in the store. Once home, choose Put away, confirm the purchased quantity and its pantry, fridge or freezer destination, then save. That step updates the inventory. You can also add items to the shopping list yourself or set a repeat schedule.

How do low-stock notifications work?

For each item you want to replenish, open More options → Kitchen & restocking and set your low-stock level and target. In Household, open Notification settings and enable this device. Use Send a test to check delivery. Notification messages do not include item names or photos.

Notifications follow saved stock changes; HabiTally cannot detect physical use. Expiry and recurring-list reminders appear in the app. On supported iPhones, open the installed Home Screen app to enable push. Devices and connections can affect delivery. Turn off replenishment for items you do not want to replace.

Can I map more than one floor?

Yes. In Home map, add a floor for each level and give it a name. Each floor has its own diagram and storage areas. Zoom, resize the map, and adjust your spaces to suit the layout. Upload a diagram if you have one, then assign items to the matching room and shelf.

Where are photos stored, and can I use HabiTally offline?

Shared photos are stored privately in Supabase for your household. Each device keeps up to 50 MB of temporary photo copies to reduce repeat downloads. The first visit downloads photos; later visits can use the cache. Browsers may clear cached files when space is low.

You still need internet to open and save shared inventory. In Household, Clear photo cache on this device removes those temporary copies without deleting cloud originals. Logging out also clears this app’s photo cache. Local-only inventory belongs to that browser and is not shared.

Which backup should I choose?

Full JSON backup: includes inventory, photos and diagrams. Keep it somewhere private for recovery. CSV: useful for item lists and importing records; it does not contain photos. PDF: a readable report you can print or save, not a restorable database.

Export includes the CSV import option. Review its matching and update choices before importing. A JSON restore can replace your current inventory, so export a fresh backup before restoring an older copy.

How do I stay logged in or log out?

HabiTally remembers your session on this device and renews it when available. Clearing browser data, privacy settings or a revoked session can require another login. Your password manager can fill the email and password fields; save prompts depend on the browser and vault.

Use Log out in the app header or Household on a shared device. Your cloud inventory stays saved.

How do I put HabiTally on my iPhone Home Screen?

Open HabiTally in Safari and choose Share → Add to Home Screen. Use the name HabiTally and enable Open as Web App if offered. Open that icon and sign in. Safari and an installed web app may keep separate sessions. An older shortcut can keep its original label; the account and inventory still use the same site.

Are my photos shared with AI or used in advertising?

HabiTally does not sell or publish your uploaded photos, use them in advertising, or send them to LLMs or AI-training providers. The optional label reader runs locally. Photos you save to a shared household are available to its members and stored with our hosting provider. Read our privacy notice for details about storage, provider access and optional speech processing.

What if an update or photo load seems stuck?

Check your connection and reload HabiTally. If asked, log in with the same account. Older open tabs need a reload after the photo-storage update. Do not choose Start empty or restore an old backup to fix a loading problem.

First-time photo loads and label-reader downloads can take longer. Your saved content stays in the account if a photo fails to load. Retry once your connection is stable. For an unresolved issue, tell the pilot organizer what you were doing and the exact message; avoid sharing private photos or passwords.
